Preventive Healthcare - Intelligent Ageing

Functional medicine is an evolution in the field of medicine, which unlike conventional medicine tries to understand how genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors combine to result in an illness. While there are many aspects of functional medicine, at its core, it is an approach to healing. Functional medicine focuses on the cause of disease, and not just the symptoms. This approach involves the patient’s history, examinations, and thorough laboratory testing, which helps uncover any dysfunctions in the 5 Key Systems of the body. The treatment programs that are created under functional medicine are designed to address each person’s unique bio-chemistry.

What are the lifestyle factors that can affect your health?

Our lifestyle has a significant influence on our physical and mental well-being. There are several habits and lifestyle factors that increase the risk of developing various diseases. Some of these are:

  • Sedentary lifestyles
  • Stress
  • Pollution
  • Junk food
  • Improper diet
  • Addictions like smoking and drinking

What is Preventive Healthcare?

The core belief of preventive healthcare is that it is always better to prevent a medical condition, rather than having to find a cure after it has progressed to severe stages. Preventive healthcare, right along with necessary lifestyle changes, can go a long way in enabling people to live more productive and healthier lives. Preventive healthcare basically refers to the measures one may take for preventing chronic diseases, and to keep lifestyle diseases away. This approach includes:

  • Regular screening for diseases
  • Medications
  • Immunization
  • Healthcare counselling
  • General preventive measures

Why do We Need Functional Medicine?

These days, we are witnessing an increase in the number of people suffering from complex and chronic diseases. Presently, the conventional way of treating these diseases involves an acute care approach. This approach lacks the methodology required for preventing and treating complex, chronic diseases. It is not the perfect solution for achieving optimal health; for neither does it take into account the unique genetic makeup of individual patients, nor does it factor in lifestyle aspects.

Functional medicine, on the other hand, is patient-centred, and targets the body as a whole instead of separate organs. This approach actually addresses the underlying causes of an illness and not just the symptoms.

How is Functional Medicine Different from Conventional Medicine?

Conventional medicine is a disease-oriented and doctor-centred approach to treatment. Under this approach, all patients are treated the same and the treatment is specialized according to the disease. The diagnosis is based on the symptoms noticed, and can help with early detection of a disease at best.
Functional medicine, as iterated before, is a health-oriented and patient-centered approach. This approach follows a customized and holistic path for each individual, treating the whole body based on the unique bio-chemical factors and genetic makeup of different patients. Functional medicine works hand in hand with preventive care, and seeks to treat the root cause of the disease instead of the symptoms.
