Know More About Diabetes: Different Types and Suggested Treatment
Diabetes is a condition that arises when your blood glucose/blood sugar, crosses the specified limit in the body. This is due to the hormone, insulin being produced in insufficient amount by the pancreas. Insulin is responsible for converting the glucose or sugar into energy. But the lack of insulin in the body inhibits the body glucose to energy conversion and causes excess levels of blood sugar or blood glucose to build up.
Kinds of Diabetes and Their Treatments
Diabetes is primarily classified into three categories, namely – Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, gestational diabetes.
Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disorder. In this case, the body immune system attacks the pancreatic cells. This causes damage to the insulin-producing cells, and consequently, the insulin levels in the body drop. This causes blood glucose to build up and the occurrence of diabetes happens.
Type 1 Diabetes Treatments
- Insulin therapy – Additional insulin is injected into the patient through injections, to make up for the insulin deficiency.
Type 2 Diabetes
This diabetic condition is often a result of unhealthy lifestyle, genetic disorder and/or obesity. Here, the pancreas is unable to maintain insulin production and as a result, the growth of unused blood glucose in the blood stream increases exponentially.
Type 2 Diabetes Ttreatments
- i.Exercise and dieting – Obesity is the main cause of Type 2 diabetes. Hence losing body weight through exercise and properly dieting is a way to control this condition.
- ii.Bariatric surgery – Through bariatric surgery, body weight can be diminished, and obesity can be controlled, the two of the main causes of type 2 diabetes.
Gestational Diabetes
Gestational diabetes occurs due to transference of the condition from one or both of the parents to a child during pregnancy.
Gestational Diabetes Treatments
- Medication – In-take of insulin injections, or metformin tablets at the regular intervals during the day, helps control the diabetes during pregnancy. It is recommended that the medications be stopped after child-birth. As always, proper dosage must be first prescribed by a medical professional.
- Dieting – In-taking starchy foods such as pasta, brown rice, or celery helps keeping the diabetic effect in check during pregnancy and prevent the condition from lapsing in the child.
Preventing Diabetes
By visiting a diabetes treatment clinic, one can ensure that diabetes symptoms are detected and measures to prevent it are taken. Detecting diabetic symptoms first hand and getting the appropriate treatment is essential in controlling diabetes.
