Gone are the days when you would just pop a pill for your aggravating headache, stomach-ache, and muscular fatigue, and so on. Today people are more drawn towards finding pain-relieving solutions that go beyond medications. Why?

This reaction is most probably an outcome of the adverse effects that dependency on pain-killing medications can have on us. Pain killers have been associated with various risks right from addictions, heart attack, liver and kidney failure to various long-term effects.
However, the biggest reason to look for pain management techniques other than medication would be because medication does not fix pain; it just masks its symptoms. You would most probably want to take up techniques that focus on the problem and treat it. Mentioned below are a few such techniques that can act as your alternatives to pain killing medications –

Acupuncture

A practice that was initiated in East Asia, acupuncture is now being embraced by other nations such as US and India too. Right from headache, osteoarthritis, menstrual cramps, lower back pain, myofascial pain, to tennis elbow, there are as many as 30 conditions that the World Health Organization recognizes acupuncture as a treatment for. Aromatherapy

This is another pain management therapy that makes use of essential oils derived from leaves, stems and other parts of herbal plants, for treatment through application on skin or inhalation. A lot of civilizations including Indian, Chinese, Egyptian, to Roman and Greek have made use of this technique in the ancient times.

Hypnotherapy

People often have several misconceptions about psychological techniques, mostly because they lack knowledge about the close relation these hold with our bodily functions. Hypnotherapy or hypnosis, like any other technique, is a real treatment procedure which focuses on mental ability to bring about positive changes, including pain relief.

Studies put forward that hypnotherapy helps control the anxiety related to pains and creates analgesia, thus reducing the need for medication.

Yoga

Yoga is an ancient Indian technique that has gained international recognition since the last few decades. It covers numerous postures or asanas that can be modified to suit one’s strengths and experiences. Each asana is to be held for a few seconds to a few minutes. Yoga can be helpful in cases including migraine, arthritis, lower back pain, fibromyalgia and other chronic pain conditions.
